More Gender Bias…

Took the boys to the bookstore to pick out some new books for bedtime. I saw these books which, of course, irked me.

As you can guess, the “invent a robot” page is from the boys book and the “draw the best bouquet” page is from the girls book. So, now, we’re teaching kids to doodle specific images based on their gender?

Clearly, no little girl would ever want to do something so foolish as “invent a robot”. Women probably aren’t smart enough to invent robots anyway. Right? Of course, Helen Greiner (co-founder of iRobot), Deborah Theobald (CEO of Vecna Technologies), and Cynthia Breazeal (designer of Kismet) might disagree.

And, if you’re a little boy who wants to draw a bouquet then there’s something wrong with you. Because, of course, Manet, Monet, & Van Gogh never painted flowers. Except, they did very famous drawings of flowers herehere, and here.

  • Why do authors and publishers continue to perpetuate this gender bias bullish*t?
  • Why do booksellers allow their stores to be used to promote this gender bias bullsh*t?
  • Why do parents allow themselves to be sucked into this gender bias bullish*t?
  • Why is the doodle of the cupcake on the cover of The Girls’ Doodle Book? That’s just bullsh*t. (I ain’t no girl and this here boy loves his cupcakes.)

But, most importantly, why can’t there just be a doodle book for kids?

I love this. You tell ‘em, Electradaddy.

^^ This

Clearly these books are in a retro style, but my love for history borders on the fetishistic and even I know that things gender bias need to be left in the fuckin’ past!!
